Homophones 1
Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have very different meanings. There are over 50 commonly used homophones and they are notoriously tricky. There are a few patterns but many more exceptions. The challenge for children is two-fold, match the correct word to the correct meaning and remember that, although they sound identical, there are two different spelling patterns to recall. These exercises help children to see the similarities and differences between each pair and then attach the correct meaning to the correct spelling.
Using the printable sheets below, and other Handy Homophone products, children will get plenty of reinforcement and be ‘on alert’ when one of these 50 words crop up.
Each exercise takes no more than 10 minutes and should, where possible, be done in the order provided.
